Rehabilitation Stories

Junco

This slate-colored junco arrived at Willowbrook January 18 after being found near a house in Glen Ellyn. He was found under the windows and may have become injured after a collision with a window. He is currently being housed in our Bird Nursery where he is recovering from an injury to his right shoulder.

Here, the wing has been wrapped with a special tape that won’t stick to his feathers. This will restrict his movement and give the shoulder a chance to heal. It will be several weeks before the veterinarian will know if the wing is healing well enough for the bird to fly again to be released.

Juncos and other birds do not understand that they cannot fly through a window. They see the reflection of the sky and trees and attempt to pass through them, only to cause an injury to the bird. See our information desk staff to find out ways you can help prevent injuries like this!
