The Butterfly Garden was newly created in 2002! Early in spring Willowbrook started with construction of the garden.
Composed of a circular path, a fountain with running water and a raised planting bed, the new garden is filled with
plants and flowers known to be ideal for attracting butterflies and birds. During spring the old pond was removed (with
the wild rice and grasses moved to the large pond on the Nature Trail) and the space was enlarged to hold the new pond
with fountain.

Due to a cold and wet spring much of the work was delayed until summer. Once the weather turned warmer work resumed
in earnest. A path was prepared and hundreds of bricks were hand laid. Field stones were arranged around the pond and
the fountain pump was installed.

Once the space was prepared a group of volunteers came in and planted hundreds of native plants. By late summer and
early fall these flowers were already attracting hummingbirds, and a variety of butterflies and moths. The 2003 growing
season will be the first full one and we expect the plants to fill in, grow and continue to attract many colorful
insects and birds.
